Akash Uddandam is a student at McMaster University pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences with a specialization in Child Health. He is deeply passionate about representation, health equity, and empowering young people to see themselves in science and medicine. Growing up in a multicultural community, Akash often noticed that few children saw doctors who looked like them, and even fewer believed that they could one day become one. This realization planted the seed for The Doc in Me, a project that merges his love for storytelling with his commitment to inclusion in healthcare.
At McMaster, Akash has studied how early exposure, mentorship, and representation can shape children’s career aspirations, particularly in underrepresented communities. He has worked with youth programs that promote health education, STEM engagement, and creative learning, experiences that helped him understand the importance of sparking curiosity early in life. The Doc in Me grew out of his desire to provide that spark through a story that reflects the diversity of the real world.
By showcasing physicians of all cultures and backgrounds as heroes, Akash hopes to help children imagine themselves in white coats, laboratories, and hospitals, spaces where their voices and perspectives are needed. Through his work, he aims to build a future where every child can see that possibility clearly and believe that the path to becoming a doctor, scientist, or leader in healthcare is open to them.

"I didn't expect my son to connect so deeply with it. He's usually shy about reading, but this story caught his attention because the doctors looked like people he actually knows. It started a whole conversation at dinner about what he wants to do when he's older."
"This book made my kids curious in a way I haven't seen before. They started asking questions about what doctors do, how long school takes, and if they could become one. It opened a door I didn't know how to open myself."
"I really liked that the doctors in the book were from different countries and spoke different languages. One of them spoke Punjabi like me, and that made me so happy because I've never seen that in a book before. I showed it to my mom and told her I want to help people when I grow up, maybe as a doctor or a nurse. It made me feel like I could actually do it one day!"
"My daughter couldn’t stop talking about this book! She said it felt like seeing herself in the story for the first time. It really helped her feel proud of who she is and curious about helping others."
"I loved how the story showed doctors coming from all over the world. It made me realize that anyone can become one if they work hard. Now I want to learn more about science!"
"As a teacher, I saw how this book sparked genuine curiosity in my students. They started asking thoughtful questions about hospitals, teamwork, and kindness. It’s the kind of story every classroom needs."
